1 out of 5 stars Not as compatible as advertised   January 7, 2009
I tried three different disks (three of Iomega 500gb USB, not three different kinds) on my various Macs and obtained varying results on my different Mac computers. Once plugged in, most times the computer did not find the disk. It would start to spin, then stop. Other times, the disk icon appeared for a while then disappeared. One disk did not work with my brand new macbook pro. The other two did and they allowed me to format them appropriately. When I plugged them into my P5 iMacs with Leopard on them, they were not found at all. I returned all three for a refund. I need more reliability than that and needed them to back up my computers. I have since purchased Western Digital "My Books", which work flawlessly and nearly silently with the above named computers. These Iomega disks don't seem hardy or reliable enough as back up disks as opposed to Iomega disks I purchased in the past.

5 out of 5 stars Works exactly as advertised!   January 6, 2009
Bought this as a backup device, the biggest selling point for me was the "Power" switch as I have read that other backup devices are "always on", and that leads to premature failure.
No complaints at all so far.

1 out of 5 stars Lost my data in 3 weeks!   January 6, 2009

It looks great, feels great and is quiet and so easy to install. Those are your pluses. But 3 weeks later, I get an error that says "Delayed Write Failed... the data has been lost." I chat with support and they tell me "Any hard drive that you have sooner or later will go bad. It is a mechanical thing that they will wear out. When that happens can't be known. What happens if you need to use the drive for backup, it is only a backup drive if the data that you have on the drive is also somewhere else. If it is only on this drive then it is a archive."

I was livid. I understand if after a 6 months, things start conking out and I should have made a triple backup, but 3 weeks? Plus I didn't even move the drive, it's been sitting pretty on my desk. My husband bought an iOmega a while ago and warned me that happened to him and I thought it was a fluke and he was probably unlucky. Including me, this makes 100% of the people I know who owned iomegas portable hdd dying on them.

While the argument of hard drives will conk out eventually is understandable, i do not see this happening for desktops or laptop hard drives (talk about mobiles) -- which then I can only conclude is they use inferior quality resources to manufacture.

bottomline - buy at your own risk and it's not a viable backup solution.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of Bytes for the Buck   January 6, 2009
I bought the Iomega Prestige 500 GB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive 34270 for $79.99 + $6.76 handling and shipping. It arrived in a timely fashion and worked right out of the box. It comes formatted with ntfs which was recognized immediately when I plugged into a system running Linux (Fedora 8). This drive is working quite well so far though I only turn it on as needed. For that reason, the on/off switch is much appreciated. I bought this drive mainly for use as a backup device, though very important data is of course backed up on dvd as well. I used gparted, as found on Parted Magic, to shrink the ntfs partition and create two more partitions, a Mac OS hfs+ and Linux ext3. The three partitions are ~ 78, 82, and 240 GiBs respectively. (note: parted magic has added hfs+ partion creation to gparted.) So far I have backed up data from xp, mini-mac, and linux thus achieving some piece of mind. (I backed up the entire fedora 8 linux installation before upgrading to fedora 10). The disk works well and, if it proves to be reliable, I will consider it to be a very worthwhile purchase. At a total cost of $86.75 for 500 GiBs the cost is an astounding 17.35 cents per GiB. (of course you only get around 466 usable GiBs). So for now I'll give it a thumbs up.

Yes we are real, just in case you're asking are we really sell all products on our site.

We've team-up with Amazon to sell their products in our store, don't worry the price is as the same as the one in Amazon.
